Purpose of the Road Safety Appraisal

As stated in the South African Road Safety Audit (SARSA) Manual, a Stage 6 Safety Audit on Existing Roads (Road Safety Appraisals) has the following objectives:

  • To ensure compatibility between the safety features of a road and the functional classification of the road;

  • To identify any feature that can, with time, create a safety problem – for example vegetation blocking a sign; and

  • To identify all features in the road environment that pose a safety hazard to any of the road users.
