Project Background

The KwaZulu Natal Department of Transport is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the Road Safety on provincial roads. As part of the road safety programme the department has identified road P339 / N2 Shaka’s Head Interchange as having high safety risks based on accident information received.

In recent years there have been 3 extremely serious vehicular collisions in the vicinity of the western ramp terminal of the N2/ P339 interchange. The most recent collision resulted in 16 fatalities.

The following reports have been reviewed in preparation of this appraisal. These reports were prepared following the fatal collision between a mini-bus taxi and a train on the 17th of August 2015 at 16:40 in the afternoon.
