Project Location and Limits of the Appraisal

The interchange is located at km 8,60 along National Route N2, Section 27. This section of the N2 is classified as a Class 1 road. The N2 crosses under Provincial Road 339 via a narrow diamond interchange. Located to the east of the interchange is the coastal resort village of Shaka’s Rock, and to the west, Shaka’s Head. The interchange is located within the KwaDukuza Municipality.

The area of influence under consideration and which forms part of the appraisal, is 1km to the east and west of the interchange terminals, as shown in the figure below:

The SANRAL jurisdiction is located 160m east and west of the ramp terminals. P339 to the east falls under KZNDoT’s jurisdiction up to the intersection of Iphala Road, as shown in Figure 2-2 below. To the west, P339 terminates at the intersection of the Provincial Road, R102. This portion, to the west of the interchange is also under KZNDoT’s jurisdiction.

The N2 carriageways consist of a rigid pavement, whilst the ramps and cross road P339 consist of a flexible asphalt pavement.

There is a rail line located immediately west of the N2 northbound off and onramp terminal. The cross road, P339 traverses over the rail line via a road over rail bridge.
