Land use and the project surrounds
This section of the N2 forms part of the National Route, from Cape Town in the Western Cape up to Ermelo in the Mpumalanga Province. The area adjacent to the interchange has evolved drastically over the last 5-10years with the development of several residential developments, such as:
-
the Simbithi Eco Estate to the east of the interchange;
-
the expansion of Shaka’s Rock itself;
-
the extension of the Shaka’s Head low to medium human settlement opposite the Imbonini Business Park.
Furthermore, the light industrial area to the west of the interchange has increased in size significantly as well.
The additional traffic generated by the above developments have a direct impact on road safety, in that there has been an increase in vehicular and pedestrian traffic, resulting in additional conflict locations.
