Escongweni Engineers have been commissioned by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport to undertake a Road Safety Appraisal at the P339 / N2 Shaka’s Head Interchange, located approximately 50 kilometres north of Durban with the view of identifying
Project Location and Limits of the Appraisal
The interchange is located at km 8,60 along National Route N2, Section 27. This section of the N2 is classified as a Class 1 road. The N2 crosses under Provincial Road 339 via a narrow diamond interchange.
Land use and the project surrounds
This section of the N2 forms part of the National Route, from Cape Town in the Western Cape up to Ermelo in the Mpumalanga Province.
Future plans surrounding the interchange
In its current form, the interchange would be classified as a rural interchange.
Appraisal Protocol
The Appraisal Team is established from members of Escongweni Engineers. The Appraisal Team have had no detailed involvement with the design of the subject under review.

The appraisal process follows the steps shown on the flow chart (Figure 3.1 in the Road Safety Audit Manual) on the next page, making appropriate adjustments for the site-specific conditions as required by the special case of an existing road.
